USB 3.0 – Not To Long Away

No doubt alot of people know what usb is, that is, Universal Serial Bus. Currently on version 2.0, are you ready for the next version of this ubiquitous interface? USB 2.0 (otherwise known as USB Hi-Speed) boosted the original 12Mbps data rate to 480Mmb/s over eight years ago, and now USB 3.0 (dubbed USB Superspeed) is set to multiply that bandwidth tenfold.

USB 3.0 connectors and cables will be 2.0  compatible as well, but you won’t be able to maximize your bandwidth unless you’re using a USB 3.0 cable with Superspeed devices and ports, but at least plugging a 3.0 cable into a 2.0 port won’t blow up your PC.

USB 2.0 cables worked off of four lines – a pair for in/out data transfer, one line for power, and the last for grounding. USB 3.0 adds five new lines (the cable is noticeably thicker), but the new contacts sit parallel to the old ones on a different plane, as opposed to being adjacent to them. This means you’ll be able to differentiate between 2.0 and 3.0 cables just by looking at the ends.

So apart from speed you ask what other benefits is version 3 going to give me?

1. Faster transfers – USB 3.0 SuperSpeed will be 10 times faster than the 480Mbps limit of the version 2.0 meaning transferring 27gb would only take 70 seconds providing your disc can write data that quickly.
2. Faster charging for appliances – The power output will be bumped up to about 900miliamps compared to 100 milliamps for version 2.
3. More Power Efficient – USB 3.0 abandons device polling in favor of a new interrupt-driven protocol, which means non-active or idle devices (which aren’t being charged by the USB port) won’t have their power drained by the host controller as it looks for active data traffic. Instead, the devices will send the host a signal to begin data transfer. This feature will also be backward compatible with USB 2.0 certified devices.

Monitor your internet bandwidth live from your computer

As I goto this snow season, i have signed up on a optus 3g plan @ $23.95 a month for 200mb. This means I have to be very careful how much bandwidth I’m using as once I go over it will cost me a fortune.

I have found the following tools useful:

Netlimiter: Free version lets you see how much each application is using and statistics on how much in total you have downloaded per hour, per day, per month etc..

DU Meter: Everything that netlimiter does but more! Although this is a paid version for $24.95

How to Connect your computer to the internet with a nokia via telstra’s nextG network

First Method:

1. First install the latest nokia pc suite.
2. Make sure your phone is connected to the computer via cable or bluetooth.
3. click the connect to internet icon.
4. Go into configure.
5. Click next and then specify you want to set up the connection manually.
6. As the access point, put telstra.internet if your using just normal pay as you go internet or telstra.datapack if you are using a datapack.
7. Leave all the other fields blank, click the tick and connect!

2nd Method:

1. Create a dialup account in windows and setup the nokia phone as a modem, just dial “*99#” and your away.

I prefer the first method as i already have nokia pc suite installed, if you don’t you probably should try method 2 :)

Facebook Ajax Integrated Chat

Ok, this new feature was literally released as i logged onto facebook today. Now you can talk to al your online contacts right on your facebook site, it even works fine if you have multiple facebook tabs open. Already i have caught up with some old mates that i havent spoken to in a while who ont have msn and the likes. Has Your Alexa Rank Gone Down Or Dissppeared?

So my rank was doing fine at 4 million with a steady flow of traffic of about 50 hits. Al of a sudden one of my posts got more traffic and i averaged 150 a day. All of a sudden my Alexa rank disappears and my rank was no longer available. Some sites suggeset they had change there Algorithm every now and then which calulates how much traffic sites get.

Some Random Info about What and how Alexa works:

• How does Alexa work? A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of reach and pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single pageview. The site with the highest combination of users and pageviews is ranked #1.
• My new site doesn’t have a rank, how long does it take? You will have to be patient and give it 3 months to give you an accurate rating. The longer your site has been monitored by Alexa the better, it gives more of an accurate level of reporting.

 Mean while to help get your your Alexa rank back up in action i suggest you do the following:

• Submit your site to Alexa and your details so it can update the thumbnail and start indexing your site. Goto the following url and change the ending to your domain: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/contact_info?url=www.yoursite.com
• Download the Alexa Toolbar – This will help increase your rank and get it moving again. If you blogging post about it and get readers to download the toolbar as well.
• Place a Alexa Rank Wiget on your site – This helps Alexa keep a check on how many people are visiting your site and will boost your rank.
