The 1 Second Film is a non-profit film that combines social-networking with collaborative art to empower many small contributions to make a difference. Anyone in the world can help produce the film by donating as little as $1. Our producers range from celebrities to great-grandmothers.

The film will be one-second of animation (made of 12 large paintings), followed by 90-minutes of credits (which include an open-source feature-length documentary). The entire film is being completed on 70mm, making it the ‘Worlds Biggest Shortest Film.’

All profits raised by the finished film will be donated to the Global Fund for Women, helping advance women’s human rights around the world.

The project is the start of a 5 Phase Plan to bring the world together, one second at a time, using collaborative art to address critical social issues.

How The 1 Second Film is made:

The Animation: There are 24 frames in one-second of film. Our film is animated and consists of 12 giant frames. Each frame is a large painting that was created simultaneously by hundreds of participants during a collaborative event. The event was held at CalArts on March 8, 2001 (International Women’s Day). The 12 finished paintings will each be filmed twice on 70mm to create the 24 frames in one-second of animation.

Financing $1 at a time: Our film is financed independently by thousands of producers who donate $1 or more. The idea is to make a film that everyone can afford to be a part of. Our producers will be listed together in the order of amount donated. Each producer also receives a producer profile on our site allowing them to collaborate together.

The Goal: Producer credits will be available until a tipping point
